Hlapich and GitaPublishing company "Skolska knjiga" from Zagreb estabilished the I.B.M. award in 1971 for the best literary text for children and for an illustration of the book for children published that year.
The award consists of a money sum, a diploma and a Gita and Hlapich statue, from academian sculptor Zelimir Janes.
The award ceremony was done in Slavonski Brod from 1992 to 1998, but it wasn't held during the War in 1991, same as 1979 and 1983.
Skolska knjiga changed their criteriums in 1999 and publishes a competition for the best unawarded literary text for Croatian authors' children. The award consist of publishing the awarded literary work.
The Award wasn't awarded since 2001.
